RESEARCH DIRECTORS LABEL: Analysing 'Can't Stop' Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Bjork 'Human Behavior'

'Can't stop' Red Hot Chilli Peppers
  • What makes this video compelling is the randomness of sequences and the wacky character performances of the males in the band.
  • The genre of the video is rock, which is made clear by the boys appearance  Anthony Kiedis (the main singer) is shown to be wearing no top, with tattoos on display and his hair down in a shaggy shoulder length style.
  • The stage performance is very eccentric, as they appear to be jumping around and rocking there heads back and forth. It is a simple set out, just having 4 guys playing guitar but there motions are inventive, fresh and odd which is why this music video is successful.
  • The raw space is bland and grey, but the objects they use such as the yellow tube at the beginning is vivid in colour, it is pure playfulness.
  • I watched the video while listening to commentaries by both Mark Romanek and Flea
  • what is conventional in the video is there is lip syncing, performance by each members of the band. One particular way that the visuals illustrate the lyrics is the continual stretch of 'cant stop' lyrics.
  • Intertextuality reference of the exhibition and artist Erwin Wurn in which this video is based on
Bjork 'Human Behaviour'

  • Dream-like
  • stop motion
  • Very heavy use of CGI
  • Narrative framework was very story meets, nightmare quality
  • Inversion
  • Reflects the lyrics about human behavior being unpredictable
